“At home, in the studio or on stage, the Steinway always inspires. Its beautiful tonal balance and dynamic response are unequaled, making it my most reliable and versatile musical companion.”

My first piano was a player-piano (or ‘pianola’). It was a gift from my uncle to my mother who had played in the past. I was around four at the time and was intrigued by this instrument. I started copying songs I heard on the radio and slowly found my way around the instrument. Later on my parents got me a new upright piano, a Tchaika (Russian) and my first grand piano was a Yamaha C3. Later I owned a Fazioli F278 and a Steinway ‘D’, both concert grands. Currently I’m very happy with my 2002 Steinway ‘B’ grand piano.

Fender Rhodes

While I was studying at the conservatory in The Hague I purchased a Fender Rhodes piano (Mark II) which I still own. Amazing analog feel and sound, and my 2nd ‘ go to’ instrument, next to the grand piano.’

Yamaha CP4 Stage Piano

‘My favorite stage piano whenever there’s no real piano nearby.

Metropole Orkest setup

‘With the Metropole Orkest I get to play various keyboards, both analog and digital. The orchestra has a Nord Stage 2 EX-88 as a master keyboard, plus a Fender Rhodes. Besides piano I also get to play Celeste, clavinet, harpsichord and Hammond organ occasionally.

Here’s a picture of an extreme setup, recording with Laura Mvula at Abbey Road Studio 1, in London, 2014. From left to right: Celeste, Steinway ‘D’, Fender Rhodes, Upright piano (this one is also known as the ‘Lady Madonna’ piano…), a Wurlitzer with the Nord Stage on top and a MacbookPro with Logic-, MainStage-, Keyscape-software etc.
